Ten Ways to Serve in Your Parish This Month
Small, practical ways to put the Gospel into action — most need only an hour.
Jesus told us that whatever we do for the least of his brothers and sisters, we do for him (Matthew 25:40). Service does not have to be big. Here are ten ideas; choose one for this month.
- Visit an elderly or sick parishioner and read the Sunday Gospel together.
- Offer to help with cleaning or decorating the church before a feast.
- Teach a catechism class, or help a catechist with the younger children.
- Join the choir, or help young people learn the Mass responses.
- Collect rice, dal and oil for families in need.
- Help a student with homework once a week.
- Welcome newcomers at the church door after Mass.
- Plant a tree or start a small garden in the church compound.
- Accompany someone to a hospital or government office.
- Pray daily for one family in your Anbiyam.
Serve in the spirit of Francis
Francis served lepers and the poor with joy, not to be seen but out of love. Serve quietly, keep the dignity of the people you help, and let your parish priest or volunteer coordinator know what you are doing so that the work is shared.
For reflection
- Which one of these could I begin this week?
- Whom could I invite to serve with me?
